Paintball is not a sport for the faint-of-heart!
Paintball is an exhilarating, physically-demanding,
adrenaline-packed sport filled with mock warfare and
gunfire. From it's humble origins in New Hampshire nearly 25
years ago, the sport currently has a wide variety of
corporate sponsors, highly competitive and lucrative
tournaments for both the amateur and the professional.
The game of paintball is a unique blending of war/hunting
games and the tactical skill of chess. Paintball began as a
group of 12 friends used tree and cattle marking paintguns
to play a version of the traditional favorite Capture the
Flag. In 1985, the first actual paintball gun was patented
and two years later the current "paintball recipe" was
developed. The recipe includes a gelatin capsule filled with
a biodegradable, water soluble and non-toxic mix of color.
Paintball has become the fourth largest alternative sport in
America surpassing snowboarding. In 2002, nearly 9,000,000
world-wide played paintball at least one time. Paintball is
now played in over 100 countries and it's popularity is
growing rapidly.
In order to play paintball, certain gear is required. The
basic setup would be a marker (paintball gun) with a hopper
(which holds the paintballs) and a tank filled with CO2 or
nitrogen which provides propulsion for the paintballs. A
mask that protects the entire face is a necessity as is
rugged, durable (baggy) clothing that should cover your arms
and legs, and a pair of good shoes or boots. If you are a
novice to paintball, you can rent the needed equipment, but
once you are hooked on the game you should purchase your own
individual gear.
